Girly Hair: My first attempt at a blow out

Following the success of Sunday’s blow out and makeover, I made a vow to style my hair every day. Well, that didn’t happen. On Thursday, I took a stab at my first blow out. I think you’ll agree that I could use a little practice.

Oh, and my hair gets totally messed up about halfway through this video. Ignore that. :-)

Going Girly Makeover #1

My friend, Jamie, gave me a makeover to kick off Going Girly. Check out the slideshow here.

I learned a lot about hair and makeup during our session, and though I can’t see myself wearing quite so much makeup or spending that much time on a daily basis, I’ve got two techniques I’d like to practice now…

  1. The Blowout: I’ve never been able to get my hair to do anything but lie flat. Jamie used mousse and a volumizing spray to help give my hair oomph. She first added volume to the roots by pulling the hair up at the base. Then, once the roots were pretty dry, she did this “pull and twist” maneuver to get the rest of my hair as straight as possible. I’m going to practice this some more and let you know how it goes.
  2. Curling eyelashes: I still can’t get the hang of this one. As it was explained, I’m supposed to put the top part of the curler against the base of my lashes, then squeeze to curl them. Jamie said to hold for about 10 seconds, then move my way up to the ends of the lashes, squeezing 2 or 3 times per eye. I’ve been told it helps to heat the curler a bit with a hair dryer, but not too much. Ouch!

P.S. The makeover and all photos (except the one where I’m holding the camera) are by Jamie Klausner. :-)

Day One: My Current Beauty Routine

My current beauty routine is pretty pared-down…

Skin:
- Drugstore-brand exfoliating scrub, every other morning
- Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Anti-Blemish Cleanser every morning
- Or, if I’m staying at my boyfriend’s place, plain old soap in the morning
- Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture SPF15 when my face seems really dry (though I think it makes me break out)
- Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner when I remember

Hair:
- This is embarrassing… I’m using up all of the old hotel shampoos and conditioners I’ve got, so I clean and condition with whatever’s available
- I blow dry and brush, or just let it air-dry most days
- I rarely use any product on my hair. When I do, the results are usually not so good

Make-Up:
- I use Carmex or Burt’s Bees lip balm when I remember, or when my lips are chapped
- For going out, I either use Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Soother (gloss) or one of the random lip glosses I’ve got hanging around. I rarely wear lipstick
- I use Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil, Concealer, and blush when I break out and have social events to attend
- No eye makeup, except for the occasional black mascara

Nails:
- I trim my nails when they break, and they’re super short, since they break often
- No nail polish
