Going Girly Makeover #1
My friend, Jamie, gave me a makeover to kick off Going Girly. Check out the slideshow here.
I learned a lot about hair and makeup during our session, and though I can’t see myself wearing quite so much makeup or spending that much time on a daily basis, I’ve got two techniques I’d like to practice now…
- The Blowout: I’ve never been able to get my hair to do anything but lie flat. Jamie used mousse and a volumizing spray to help give my hair oomph. She first added volume to the roots by pulling the hair up at the base. Then, once the roots were pretty dry, she did this “pull and twist” maneuver to get the rest of my hair as straight as possible. I’m going to practice this some more and let you know how it goes.
- Curling eyelashes: I still can’t get the hang of this one. As it was explained, I’m supposed to put the top part of the curler against the base of my lashes, then squeeze to curl them. Jamie said to hold for about 10 seconds, then move my way up to the ends of the lashes, squeezing 2 or 3 times per eye. I’ve been told it helps to heat the curler a bit with a hair dryer, but not too much. Ouch!
P.S. The makeover and all photos (except the one where I’m holding the camera) are by Jamie Klausner.

Heya Mel
Little tip in the eye lash department. It’s called lash wand, which sort of works like the eye lash curler but it’s battery driven, so it heats up. My lashes are long and curly by nature but has an awful tendency to sometimes twist around and get into my eyes when using mascara (ouch!!) Can even be used after applying a thin layer of mascara for better effect.
Good luck with your girlie adventures:)
Lotsa luv from a mutual tomboy who tries her best to be girlie too. Btw how did you manage to learn the high heels trick?:)

LOVE the slideshow!
I’ll check out the lash wand. I always love gadgets, so if they help me go girly, even better!
As for the heels… well, I usually wear low heels (around an inch or so). Easy enough to walk in, but they give me a little lift. It looks a lot less “dumpy” than when I wear sneakers. I’ll probably post about this at some point soon.
Melanie, I love this! I need some eye makeup advice for sure. Bring it on.
Oh man, the eye makeup’s going to take me a while. I’ve learned a lot about eyelash curlers in the last week, though, so look for a post on that in the next day or so.
Skankalicious! I’m holding out for the eyeliner tutorial. That stuff is too hard to put on. All you end up doing is pulling your eyelid around a bunch and perhaps stabbing yourself in the eyeball. Someone once told me to melt it slightly under a flame before putting it on, but then it seems to be too thick, not to mention the challenge of getting it to go on in a straight line (and this coming from a former painter).
I’m still struggling with eyeliner. I’ve also got to learn how to line my lids with eyeshadow and a liner brush. I’ve heard it’s possible, but I usually end up with a big ol’ mess!
So I ordered some eyeliner gel and an eyeliner brush. I’ll let you know how that experiment goes. Have you ever heard of Paula’s Choice? It’s a line of skin care and cosmetics designed by this woman named Paula Begoun who has years of experience researching and testing cosmetics and skin care products for their effectiveness. I really love all of her products that I have tried and everything is quite reasonably priced–only a little more expensive than the drugstore. She has a lot of followers. I think her return policy is pretty liberal, too. I tend to use the drugstore brands of things when I like them (like the CVS knockoff of Cetaphil to wash my face)but some of her products are far superior.
Amy, great suggestion. I’ll look into Paula’s Choice. Let me know how the eyeliner gel/brush thing goes. I may need to get some pointers from you!
